Biker Cops Go Underground
- Tube police get two-wheelers to help fight crime

IN A PLOT twist that could have come from a cross between Biker Mice from Mars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or, for more cultured types, a Luc Besson film, Tube police are to be handed motorbikes to help them defeat crime.

Those with visions of two-wheelers roaring in and out of Tube tunnels will be disappointed to learn, however, that the bikes will not be used underground.

Instead, biker-officers will ride their new machines at ground level to get to crime scenes more quickly than either the Tube itself or traffic-cursed patrol cars would allow.

"We're using them to reduce the time it takes to respond to urgent calls," said Inspector Tom Weir of the British Transport Police.

At first there will be only four of the UKP10,000 1,100cc bikes in use, based at Finnsbury Park station. If the pilot scheme is deemed successful, it will be extended to other areas.
