Potter Works Magic at the Box Office
- Harry hogs the limelight as film smashes records

IT'S OFFICIAL: Harry Potter is the highest grossing film to open in the UK - and is on course to break box office records as the biggest movie ever, both here and across the pond.

Over its opening weekend, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone notched up UKP16 million in Britain and UKP68 million in the US. The film could even oust Titanic as the biggest grossing film of all time with UKP575 worldwide.

UK box office takings were almost double that of Star Wars Episode 1, which previously held the record for a film opening in Britain, taking UKP9.5 million in 1999.

"Given the enormous popularity of the novel in the United Kingdom, and the fact that the story is set in Britain, we're thrilled that audiences in the UK have embraced the film so wholeheartedly," said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros.

However, while critics have generally praised the film, some reviewers have attacked it for being overly long, too slow and somewhat confusing for children.
