New Altman Movie Headlines London Film Festival
- Gosford Park leads off cast of 200

ROBERT ALTMAN'S first British film - Gosford Park - kicks off this year's London Film Festival at Leciester Square.

The title might bring images of gritty non-league football to mind but the film is, in fact, set at the opposite end of the social scale, in high society Britain between the First and Second World Wars.

Gosford Park is the bill-topper to 200 films at the festival which showcases movies from around the world and lasts from today until 22 November. Other big name films to be shown include David Lynch's new effort, Mulholland Drive; Monsters Inc, the animated movie currently doing big box office in the US, and a re-release of Apocaplyse Now, re-edited by director Francis Ford Coppola.

Cynics may suggest there is something damning about the state of present day mainstream cinema that it takes a film nearly a quarter of a century old to pose serious questions about a superpower at war with one of the world's poorest countries.
