Cash-strapped Ex-All Saint Goes Solo
- 'I've got to earn some money,' says former singer Melanie Blatt

FORMER All Saint member Melanie Blatt is to embark on a solo singing career - because she says she needs the cash.

Mel, who has dismissed claims that she will be teaming up with former band-mate Shaznay Lewis, admitted she would have to continue working in the music industry because of financial circumstances. "I wanted to retire but I couldn't afford to. I've unfortunately got to go back to earn some money", she said. "At the moment I'm just at home. I've been in the garden, taking my kid to school and doing the washing up."

The singer argued that endless rounds of promotional duties had taken their toll.
"I love music, I just don't like the lifestyle that goes with it," she said, before adding, "I'm going to have to go back to the grind."

The band called it quits after a series of rows, which led to Mel taking sides with Lewis against sisters Natalie and Nicole Appleton. The Appletons, who announced last week they are to work as a duo, have already signed their own deal.

Mel, who plans to work with her partner, one-time Jamiroquai member Stuart Zender, said of her forthcoming musical direction: "It isn't going to be anything anyone likes." The former All Saint sensibly ruled out acting as a source of income after Honest, the film in which she made her screen debut, flopped dramatically.
