|Straw Sends Asylum Seekers Back
- Refugees forced on flights to war zone
THOUSANDS of asylum-seekers are being forcibly flown out of the country under the instructions of Home Secretary Jack Straw.
In the run up to a possible general election in either May or June, Straw is at pains to appear to be tough on immigration so has decided to charter aeroplanes to send, mostly Kosovan, asylum seekers back to their war-torn country.
"This is something on which we can make considerable savings," said a Home Office spokesperson. "It is cheaper to charter a plane than keep people in a detention centre for two months."
One plane is believed to have left from London Stansted airport for Pristina in Kosovo this morning and more are due to follow in coming weeks. The treatment of Kosovan refugees represents a cynical about turn by the government which was keen to stress the humanitarian basis for its bombing campaign during the Kosovo-Serbia war two years ago.
