|EU're Talking Crap, Say UK Sewage Experts
- Commissioner reveals missed treatment targets
LONDON has come under fire from the European Union for the state of its sewage.
EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom said London sewage authorities had not named sensitive areas adequately, leading to "an under-assessment of the wastewater treatment targets".
In football terms, that is like getting a yellow card. More serious 'red card' type failures were reported in Brussels, Hastings and Brighton where much sewage is apparently discharged without treatment. Bear that in mind the next time you fancy a dip off the south coast.
The British sewage industry was quick to slam Wallstrom's findings. "We consider the report misinterprets the data," a statement from the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) said. "It shows only a partial understanding of the action the UK has taken, and the scientific basis for that action."
The DETR point to a big investment programme currently underway as evidence for their claims and can at least content themselves with the knowledge that Wallstrom was even more scathing about cities in France and Germany, which had not handed any information to her researchers.
