| Chips With Light Source - UK scientists claim break through in silicon technology BRITISH scientists have claimed a great leap forward in the race to produce faster and smaller computers by developing light emitting silicon. Professor Kevin Homewood , leading a team of researchers at Surrey University, said: "Silicon is meant to give out heat, not light. But we have engineered it and built walls around the part that conducts heat to allow light to go through instead." Switching to light instead of heat as a means of transmitting digital information should allow computers to take an exponential leap in terms of both size and performance. "It will enable continued developments in telecommunications, and be particularly useful for the internet," Homewood said. |
