|Population Power Surge for Britain
- UN projections point to more weight for UK in EC
BRITAIN'S power within Europe is likely to increase dramatically over the next 50 years thanks to variations in population growth among European Community nations.
While the UK's total population is expected to remain fairly static at around 57 million until the year 2005, Germany and Italy are set to see big falls in their numbers as declining birth rates kick in.
UN figures released yesterday predict that Germany will experience a 14 per cent fall in its population in the next half century, while Italy is due for a 25 per cent drop. That would leave Germany with a population somewhere in the region of 70 million and Italy down at 45 million.
The implications of such changes for the EC are wide ranging, especially after last year's political settlement at Nice which allocated decision making power much more on the basis of population than before.
