Brand New Start for Fiennes
- RSC debut for English Patient star

RALPH FIENNES will perform in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Ibsen's play, Brand, later this year. Although the venue has not been confirmed the offer of an unusually short six month contract seduced the star of the award-winning film The English Patient.

Artistic director Adrian Noble's efforts to attract sexier actors to a variety of venues marks a move towards the commercial sector. His determination to promote the RSC as a commodity and forge links with the likes of The Round House and the Old Vic has resulted in the appointment of Andrew Wylie to clinch publishing deals.

Noble is hoping Brand will follow in the footsteps of Ibsen's Ghosts, soon to close at The Comedy theatre after a successful run. Fiennes could certainly learn a thing or two from partner Francesca Annis, whose stage performance in the dramatic tale of disease and deception won critical acclaim.
