Loot Lure For New Tory Leader
- Getty stumps up UKP5 million to 'deliver victory'

THE TORY PARTY, thrashed at the polls last week for the second time in four years, have received a welcome fillip in the form of a UKP5 million donation from multi-millionaire Sir John Paul Getty.

"The Conservative Party, in my view, is the party best equipped to defend the British way of life," Getty said. "I hope that my donation will help to enable a new leader to deliver a Conservative victory at the next election."

Who that new leader will be is to be decided in the coming weeks, with Michael Portillo the clear front runner, despite a whispering campaign against him among Tory traditionalists, worried about the former Shadow Chancellor's gay past.

Today, one of Portillo's rivals for the leadership, Anne Widdecombe, revealed again the bitterness running through the Tory Party that has helped keep it from power. "Unless there is a revolution in the way he controls his supporters the answer's 'no'," Widdecombe said in answer to a question about her willingness to serve under the charismatic favourite, were he to win the nomination.
