Cannabis Enters the Commons
- New Bill calls for legalisation of popular soft drug

THE LEGALISE IT campaign has received another boost with the news that backbench Labour MP Jon Owen Jones is to table a Bill in the House of Commons seeking the de-criminalisation of cannabis.

"I smoked it when I was a student," said Owen Jones, "I would not have taken it more than once if I did not like it."

The MP for Cardiff Central says he has not indulged in the weed for 20 years but nevertheless wants to see cannabis legislation relaxed, along the lines of the system used in The Netherlands.

Owen Jones' Bill is the latest in a rash of recent events that have increased the chances of cannabis one day entering the legal realm. Tory leadership candidate Michael Portillo called current laws into question last week and new Home Secretary David Blunkett has said it is time for an "adult, intelligent debate," on the issue.

Despite such high profile statements, Owen Jones' Bill probably will not become law as, even if a majority of MPs support it, government backing would be required to take it further, an event seen as highly unlikely.
