Cameron Can't Keep Away
- West End impresario happy to back new sci-fi show

CAMERON MACKINTOSH has gone back on his promise to renounce new musicals. By backing a 21 year-old's debut sci-fi musical, he has, however, stayed true to his belief that what the theatre industry needs is new blood.

"Sir Cameron Mackintosh was intrigued by my new spin on the music and MTV aesthetic," said young Scottish student Daniel O'Brien. Area 51, his cutting-edge musical, has already been nominated for the Vivian Ellis Prize of Best Newcomer of the Year, although a venue has not yet been confirmed.

Taking it's name from the secret US military base where a UFO supposedly crashed in 1947, O'Brien's tale of extraterrestrial warfare features flashbacks and contemporary music. "We're not simply rehashing the same old musical theatre," said O'Brien.
