- Italians and Chinese take to the sea in brave record attempts
GONDOLIERS 1, CHINESE SWIMMER 0 - that was the result of the great cross-Channel race yesterday when the bit of sea separating Britain from mainland Europe played host to a trio of intrepid record breakers.
Italians Vittoria Orio, and Enzo Liska, both 60, made the 22 mile crossing in a little over seven hours to become the first to traverse the channel by gondola. "We sang lots of Venetian songs to keep us amused," Enzo said.
Whether or not the pair rowed past Xhang Jian, is open to question. Yesterday, the fish-like fitness trainer became the first from his country to swim the Channel in an event shown live on Chinese TV, all 12 hours of it.
Quite what the fascination of the Channel is to people from countries with thousands of miles of coastline of their own is a little hard to fathom, though the often lamentable service on Eurostar might be one factor.
