Rail Crash Death Toll On the Rise
- London-bound train hit car on east coast main line track

AT LEAST 15 people are feared to have died as a London bound inter-city passenger train crashed near Selby in North Yorkshire early this morning.

"We are looking at 15 dead at the moment but I'm sure that number will rise," Sergeant Andy Selby of the British Transport Police said.

It is believed the crash was caused by a Land-Rover towing a trailer that careered down an embankment, coming to a halt on the east coast main line rail track. The 4.45 from Newcastle to King's Cross was derailed when it ploughed into the vehicle and was then itself rammed by a northbound goods train.

Rescue teams are currently at the scene, trying to extricate from the wreckage the remainder of the 120 passengers not already confirmed as fatalities or moved to nearby hospitals.
