Vinnie Knocks Out Caine At Movie Awards
- Snatch beats competition to win film award

HARDMAN Vinnie Jones has nailed an award for his performance in British gangster film, Snatch.

The former footballer picked up the Best Actor award for his role as Bullet Toothed Tony at the Empire Film Awards held in London last night. Snatch also scored Best Director for Guy Ritchie.

Vinnie, who beat off competition from Michael Caine and Robert Carlyle, said modestly: "I'm honoured. To be compared to Michael Caine is one thing, but to actually beat him in an awards category is unbelievable."

Hit British flick Billy Elliot also had reasons to be cheerful. Despite losing out at the Oscar nominations - only director Stephen Daldry and actress Julie Walters picking up nominations - the tale of a ballet-dancing boy won Best Film, Best Actress for Julie Walters and Best Debut for child star, Jamie Bell.

Ridley Scott's Oscar nominated Gladiator marched off with Best Film while leading star Russell Crowe won Best Actor for his role as Maximus Decimus Meridius. Meanwhile, follicly-challenged British film veteran Richard Harris snuck off with the lifetime achievement award. Good on the old goat.
