|Vaudeville Takes it to the Max
- New owner heralds new era for theatre
THEATRE PRODUCER Max Weitzenhoffer has bought the Vaudeville Theatre on the Strand. His purchase undermines the West End monopoly of Cameron Mackintosh, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the Ambassadors Theatre Group.
West End competition for the work of living writers now looks set to increase. In response to the Ambassadors' support of fresh writers like Lee Hall and young companies like Share Experience, Lloyd Webber recently created the Binkie Beaumont Award for theatre producers of new work.
Now the Vaudeville is to give both a run for their money by programming a string of new plays.
Following the success of Madame Melville and Wit, the next piece scheduled for the Vaudeville is Hugh Whitemore's God Only Knows. The play stars RSC actor Derek Jacobi and opens in March.
