Triple Blow for RSC
- Britain's leading classical theatre company suffers funding cuts

ALLIED DOMECQ has ended its UKP1.1 million annual sponsorship of The Royal Shakespeare Company after seven years as the largest single arts sponsor in the UK. The Arts Council and the Barbican have also threatened to withdraw their annual grant of UKP13 million.

"In the light of changed business objectives following a major restructuring of Allied Domecq, the partnership will come to a natural end," said a company spokesperson, citing a conference to debate the Labour government's policies on culture, and an RSC theatre technician's design lighting for Allied's pubs, as examples of the partnership's success.

However, the Arts Council proved more critical. Their review urged the RSC to concentrate on "more and better" Shakespeare instead of the recent drift towards plays by other writers. Furthermore, a Barbican spokesperson said the quality of the company's work badly needed to improve
