New Wembley to Get the Go Ahead
- National stadium stays in London

LONDON looks set to hold on to its place as the home of the England football team with news expected today that plans for a new Wembley stadium will finally get the go ahead.

Strong bids from Birmingham and Coventry sewed doubts in the future of Wembley, especially since the latter's bid was marked by chaotic financial and political shenanigans, but the government now looks likely to accept that the national football stadium should be sited in the national capital.

There is still some confusion as to the exact nature of the new stadium, mostly surrounding the place of athletics in the scheme. Government ministers are known to be concerned that UKP120 of national lottery money has already been handed to the Wembley consortium but that football, easily Britain's richest sport, appears to be the sole beneficiary.
