Privatised Schools Among Worst in the Country
- Islington education company to be fined for failure

GOVERNMENT plans to turn over large sections of the education sector to private firms have taken a knock with the news that Islington schools, now run by [email protected], have suffered a drop in performance.

Islington schools were already well down the national performance tables before CEA took charge in April 2000, but such is the lamentable set of results posted by CEA in both primary and secondary schools that it now faces a UKP400,000 fine.

In primary level English, Maths and Science, Islington saw the biggest drop in performance of any area in the country while, among secondary schools, Islington is now rated above just two other council areas.

Education Minister Estelle Morris has set great store by the ability of privately run education services to sort out 'failing' public sector schools and will be hoping CEA's promise that the Islington results are merely a "temporary set back" are more than hot air.
