|Culture Minister Under Fire From Folk Musicians
- 'Listening to three Somerset folk singers is my idea of hell,' says Kim Howells
THE MINISTER responsible for promoting music and the arts managed to stir up anger among folk musicians by disclosing the fact that he thought their music sounded like hell.
Folk singer Martin Carthy took umbrage at Kim Howells on hearing that the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport had dismissed folk music as the pits. "Musicians have a tough enough time without a prat like that," said Carthy.
Howells made his thoughts known before the House of Commons when asked by Liberal MP David Heath why it was a criminal offence to have more than two musicians to perform in a pub.
When Mr Heath made his point by saying it would be all right to have Madonna performing but not three folk singers from Somerset, Howells replied: "For a simple urban boy such as me, the idea of listening to three Somerset folk singers sounds like hell". The Best of Folk Music Box Vol. 1-3 won't be finding it's way on Mr Howell's Christmas list, we presume.
