| Blair Denies Euro Promise
- Reports from Brazil on backing for single-currency are false, says PM TONY BLAIR has denied reports in Brazil claiming the Prime Minster said he wanted to go down in history as the man who swapped the pound for the euro. In answer to a question on how he wanted to be remembered, Veja magazine reported that Blair said: "As the prime minister who brought Britain into the monetary union." Blair's aides have been quick to issue denials, albeit in contradictory terms. In one statement they say misunderstanding arose because of the long question asked by a Veja journalist. In another, they dismiss the reports "100 per cent". Meanwhile no-one is denying that Blair also said that for Britain to be isolated from Europe would be a "great mistake." |
