|Straw Wants 30,000 Asylum Seekers Kicked Out
- Thousands of immigration officers needed to meet target
JOBS might be getting axed by the thousand in the hi-tech sector but the government has come up with a new wheeze to help the unemployed back to work.
Home Secretary Jack Straw has announced that 1,500 new-style immigration officers will be recruited to add to the 700-strong army trained to act as snatch squads in the government's drive to send 30,000 asylum seekers back to the countries from which they have fled.
Refugees caught by the asylum squad will be sent back on hundreds of specially chartered flights after being held in detention centres. Last year Straw's Home Office department targeted 12,000 asylum seekers for repatriation, itself a big increase on previous years, but political pressure from the opposition Tory Party, which advocates the imprisonment of every single refugee, has seen the government pander to the racist right and adopt ever harsher policies.
Even the 30,000 figure could end up being well short of the actual number of asylum seekers that exit the UK, as Straw admitted that "there are many others who leave the country voluntarily after they have exhausted their rights of appeal."
