Westminster Snubs Car Free Day
- People will use tubes and buses, moans central London council

PETROL heads have got the upper hand in recent weeks as media pundits and politicians scrabble for their approval. So it something of a surprise to learn that today is Car Free Day in parts of London.

London boroughs Camden, Lambeth, Merton, Southwark and Sutton are all hoping people ditch their motors in favour of public transport and then continue to do so once the day is long forgotten.

Car Free Day is also being supported by over 800 urban areas throughout Europe, but most of central London is giving the idea a miss, thanks to Westminster Council's decision not to take part.

"Any measures which get people out of their cars will put pressure on buses and tubes," said Louise St John Howe, Westminster's transport chief. Maybe we've missed something, but isn't that the point?
