Greta's Guardsman Shot Down By Critics
- Dwindling audiences signal early closure

SCATHING reviews and poor attendances have dashed Greta Scacchi's chances of a successful return to the West End, with producers announcing the early closure of her new play.

The Guardsman, currently showing at the Albery Theatre, marked Scacchi's first appearance on the London stage in 12 years. But instead of celebrating, the 40 year-old star was faced with the embarrassment of being told that the play was to be pulled after only two weeks.

Critics have been out in force to slam Ferenc Molnar's drama, about a jealous husband who dresses up as a soldier to test his wife's infidelity, resulting in dismal turnouts for the performances.

The show, originally set to run until the New Year, will now close on October 28. It will be replaced by Simon Callow's production The Mystery of Charles Dickens, currently enjoying a successful run at the Comedy Theatre.
