Broken Rail Likely Cause of Hatfield Crash
- Speed restrictions ordered on similar lines

HATFIELD rail crash investigators have fingered a piece of broken track as the probable cause of yesterday's accident in which four people lost their lives.

"We will be investigating the possibility that a broken rail could have been a factor," Railtrack director Nicholas Pollard said. "If that is the case then we must establish clearly why that rail appears to have broken."

Though Pollard's words appear cautious, the likelihood that a broken rail was at the root of the crash on the mainline between Kings Cross and Leeds is such that Railtrack have now ordered speed restrictions on similar lines across the country.
