Rail Crash Kills Five
- Train from Kings Cross derails just outside London

FIVE PEOPLE died and many more are injured following a train crash this afternoon at Hatfield.

The Leeds-bound train, carrying up to 600 passengers, was travelling at over 100mph when it skidded off the tracks near Stevenage, just north of London. Two are seriously injured and have been taken to the QE2 hospital in Welwyn Garden City. At least 80 are described as walking wounded.

"The roof has been completely ripped off the restaurant car. There is a guy with a broken leg still inside the train and two people with severe gashes. The first class carriages have completely come off the rails," said passenger Justin Rowlett.

The crash, which happened at 12.24pm.has been described by the fire service as a 'major accident.' No other trains were involved.

Trains are being diverted via Hertford and delays are expected.
