Film Council Sets Sights On Blockbusters
- New industry body takes over distribution of lottery cash

THE FILM Council is to be responsible for the public funding of British films in an effort to boost the industry's chances of making blockbuster-style movies.

Given the task of distributing over UKP50 million lottery cash each year, the newly created body will take over from organisations such as the Arts Council and the British Film Institute with the aim of producing fewer but more commercially viable movies. "We hope a good deal of these films will really connect with a broad audience," said a spokesperson for the Film Council

The Film Council was set up in reaction to recent criticism that, although British films are doing well in an artistic sense, they fail to get the cash registers ringing.
