- Gene evidence points to ten founding fathers for Europe
EUROPEAN MEN: it's time for a massive upwards revision of your Christmas card list.
That is the startling conclusion of a report from a team of Italian scientists who have discovered that the vast majority of men in Europe are related to just ten dads.
Descendants of the ten arrived in Europe from the near and far east in two waves, one around 20,000 years ago, the other 14,000 years later. By implication, most of the Americas are also part of this brotherhood of man, as well as significant chunks of Asia.
Evidence for these close blood ties, studied by Pavia University researchers, comes from genetic material that contains the tell-tale Y chromosomes passed on from father to son.
