Old Guard Kick at Ken Over Royals
- Aide's republican leanings used against new Mayor

IT'S STARTED already. On Ken Livingstone's very first day at work in his new job, a cosy combination of the establishment and the media has combined to try to undermine the first elected Mayor of London.

Livingstone is under fire because one of his aides, Kumar Murshid, has been outed as anti-Royal. "We are now beginning to see what lies behind the Livingstone facade," stormed Tory MP David Willshire across the pages of several conservative newspapers, after Murshid had criticised the royal family's heredity right to rule.

Some facade. Livingstone has never hidden his republican sympathies. "I would like to see the abolition of the monarchy," he once said. Although the story is a trumped up piece of fluff, it does serve as an illustration of what Livingstone can expect in the future, and as a reminder of what happened in the past when, in the 1980s, the left-wing maverick was pilloried by the media while head of the old Greater London Council for his, shock-horror, anti-racist and anti-homophobic policies.
