Blair Bangs Drum for e-Commerce
- PM wants Lisbon conference to embrace virtual future

PRIME MINISTER Tony Blair is in Lisbon for an European Community summit today flying the flag not just for Britain but for the internet and e-commerce.

Blair believes boosting business over the web is the way to solve Europe's deep rooted unemployment problems. The PM, say aides, wants to "make Europe the best place in the world to do business in the hi-tech knowledge economy," by introducing measures to promote e-commerce.

Critics are worried that the new stress on trendy e-commerce is merely a cover for Blair's plan to rip up many of the welfarist social and employment policies that business leaders want to sweep away in a bid to turn Europe's economy into a copy of that of the US.
