58 Immigrants Found Dead at Dover
- Straw calls for fresh crackdown

FIFTY-EIGHT dead bodies were found this morning in a lorry arriving at Dover from Zeebrugge in Belgium.

The dead are thought to be Chinese would-be illegal immigrants who were either suffocated or frozen as the lorry made its journey across the Channel. There are two survivors.

Immediately British Home Secretary Jack Straw used the tragedy - Britain's biggest ever immigration disaster - to call for tougher measures against the criminal gangs that help immigrants beat the authorities.

"This particular incident is now subject to a major police investigation," Straw said. "The government is determined to continue to crack down on the evil trade in such trafficking." The problem is cracking down further on the traffickers is the one sure way of creating the ground for more disasters to occur.

The demand for immigration will not go away, so if traffickers find their job harder, there will be two results; the traffickers will charge more for their services and resort to increasingly underhand and therefore dangerous ways to circumvent the authorities.

In fact, the only way to stop people-trafficking is to remove the incentive; that is to say remove immigration controls. The lives of 58 people demand nothing less.
