|Clinton Eyes UK Move
- US dominates immigration to the UK
US PRESIDENT Bill Clinton is the latest American to fancy a move to the UK, it has emerged.
Following in the footsteps of Madonna, Kathleen Turner and Tom Cruise in an annual influx of some 42,000 Americans, Clinton is reported to be looking for property in the picturesque Oxfordshire countryside, close to Oxford University where he was a student in his younger days.
Clinton apparently plans to guest as a lecturer at Oxford, living in the UK for a large chunk of his time from when he leaves office later this year.
The numbers of American immigrants to the UK makes startling reading for anyone who has followed the rabidly racist debate on immigration which has disfigured British politics for the past couple of years.
Nearly a fifth of the non-European immigration to the UK in 1997 (the last year for which official figures exist) was from the US, with almost a third coming from predominantly white former British colonies such as Australia and South Africa.
Add in the hundreds of thousands of European immigrants, especially to London, and it quickly becomes clear that immigration to the UK is overwhelmingly dominated by white people, a fact that you won't find mentioned in many places, but one which needs to be borne increasingly in mind, not least in memory to the 58 - non-white - people who died in the back of a lorry on their way to Dover yesterday.
