|London to Get New Trams
- Croydon success sparks government interest
PLANS by London Transport for for a new network of trams and trolley busses have been given the green light by the government, following the success of the Croydon Tramlink scheme.
Tramlink, which joins Croydon to Wimbledon and Beckenham, launched earlier this year and has already been pronounced a winner. The new extension to the Docklands Light Railway (which is seen as half way between a tram and a metro system) out to Lewisham in south east London is also attracting plaudits.
It's a similar story with tram schemes in Manchester and Birmingham and now the government wants to build on this success, starting with more trams for the capital, in order to encourage the switch from cars to public transport. It is believed the first new lines would be earmarked for outer London boroughs currently poorly served by the underground network.
