Live Hardcore Self Show
- Writer observing the observers of the observed

NOVELIST Will Self is the centrepiece of a very novel (aren't they all?) performance art installation taking place in central London this week.

Self, author of the Quantity Theory of Insanity, might be thought crazy to take on the project in which he will write about the people who come to watch him write, but he is sure it is a good idea.

"People who come to see me will see exactly what is going on in my mind through what I write as I think," Self said. "This is enactment of mind in the purest sense."

Self's words of wisdom or otherwise will be shown on a big plasma screen as he is typing them out in a scheme thought up by Mark Francis and Jay Jopling, who run Fig-1, a project that aims to show 50 art happenings in 50 weeks.

For those who want to become a character in Self's improvised prose, Fig-1 can be found on Fareham Street, Soho (nearest Tube Tottenham Court Road), or you can e-mail the man once allegedly caught taking heroin on an aeroplane containing Tony Blair at [email protected]

More reticent souls can keep up with the author's writings in The Independent newspaper which is to publish some of the work from the project from tomorrow.
