Bomb Explodes on Hammersmith Bridge
- Anti-terrorist squad called in to investigate blast

HAMMERSMITH Bridge was hit by a bomb early this morning, prompting fears of new terrorist campaign in London.

The bomb exploded at 4.30am on the south, or Barnes, side of the River Thames, causing damage to the bridge and blowing windows out of nearby flats. So far, there have been no reports of casualties.

"A small explosive device was attached to a girder underneath the bridge on the south side," a police spokesperson said. "We currently have numerous police officers searching the area which has been sealed off. Anti-terrorist branch officers are also at the site."

Hammersmith Bridge has only been back in business for six months following a three year make-over. In 1986 an unexploded Provisional IRA bomb was found at the same spot as today's device
