London: Tops For Tap Water
- Capital's H2O is better than the bottled stuff, says report

WE ALL know that the capital is smothered in some of the most polluted air around. But more surprising comes the news that Londoners are privy to the best tap water in the country, according to a Government report today.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) discovered that 99.87 per cent of more than 452,500 tests reached specified standards compared to 99.82 per cent for England and Wales as a whole.

The report followed yesterdays announcement by Environment Minister Michael Meacher that British tap water is better than bottled water.

"The quality of drinking water is second to none in this country," he said. "It's as good as anywhere on the continent and, I would say, considerably better than bottled water."

Mr Meacher explained that the improvement in the quality of water was partly a result of the investment made by the Tory government, an initiative that had been "expanded substantially" under Labour.
