Gates Warning for Psion
- Software development the future for Microsoft chief

BILL GATES' shock decision to remove himself from the helm of Microsoft in order to concentrate on software development is likely to have major implications for Psion, the UK company which is leading the battle against Windows CE in the palmtop computer market.

Gates has said that he wants to concentrate his efforts on developing Microsoft's internet software, which is likely to mean focussing on the next wave of internet penetration - mobile web access. "I'm returning to what I love most, technology," said Gates. "These are dramatic times in our industry. As we look ahead we recognise that we must refocus and reallocate our resources and talents."

Psion are generally acknowledged to have a lead in technology over Microsoft in a market segment predicted by most pundits as one of the big growth areas of the future, not least because of the expected merger between the current generation of hand held devices and mobile phones. Psion have a tie-up with some of the big names in European telecommunications.
