|UK Slips Down Tourist Table|
- China storms past Millennium Britain
THE MILLENNIUM celebrations came too late in the year to prevent Britain slipping down the tourist league table, it has been revealed.
China, which posted a healthy 8% increase, edged the UK into sixth place in the league of most visited countries on the planet. Tourist chiefs blamed the strong pound as Britain's figures for 1999 - 25.7 million international visitors - remained almost identical to those of 1998.
Out in front was France, which welcomed a hefty 71.4 million visitors, with Spain, the USA and Italy next in the 1999 rankings. Industry insiders expect 2000 to show an increase for the UK thanks partly to the Dome and the London Eye big ferris wheel.
