River of Fire? What Fire?
- Media and Public backlash at shambolic Australian Thames display

NOW THE PARTY IS OVER, here comes the post mortem.

While most Londoners had the night of their lives, whether dancing the night in a club or boozing down the pub, those who chose to line the River Thames were generally disappointed. Yes, the much vaunted fireworks display got tongues wagging, but the equally touted River of Fire was a non-event. Most spectators were non-plussed at the complete lack of puff. The media is leading a witch hunt against the fire-team.

Australian organiser Robert McDermott claims to be stunned by London's negative reaction to his pyro-downer. "We provided exactly what we said we would provide - a sequential chase." Unlike the millions of others on the banks of the capital's watery thoroughfare he claims to have seen the River of Fire. So how come he caught a glimpse while locals did not? "Negative think", he explained.

Yeah right. See you next year, Mr McDermott? We think not.
