New Battle of Trafalgar Dawns
- Plans launched for pedestrian-friendly square

DRIVERS and pedestrians have been set on a collision course with motorists the most likely to be left licking their wounds.

Most visitors to London will be happy with a scheme announced today to pave over one of the busiest roads in the capital, but motoring pressure groups and taxi organisations are furious with the proposals. Outline plans for Trafalgar Square feature a new pedestrianised area stretching from outside the National Gallery to the north part of the square.

Londoners and tourists alike have often complained that Trafalgar Square is little more than a glorified roundabout. Planners hope the new scheme will change the traffic-dominated ambience of the square and encourage its use as a piazza after the style of continental European piazzas.
