Dawn End to Stansted Hijack
- All hostages released from 727

THE STANSTED hijack is over. All hostages were released, physically, if not mentally, unharmed, from the beached Boeing 727 during the early hours of this morning as the Afghan hijackers gave themselves up to police.

Hostages were released in two batches. 85 left the plane at 3.15am, 66 nearly three hours later when the 10 hijackers also walked across the tarmac. Police said they were "delighted" at the peaceful end to a situation which had dragged on for some four days following the arrival of the 727, hijacked when on an internal flight in Afghanistan.

It is still not clear what the hijackers wanted to achieve. Speculation continues that up to 40 passengers were party to what many believe was a desperate bid to escape the clutches of the hated Taliban government in Afghanistan in favour of the limbo world of the UK's Kafkaesque asylum laws.
