|Archer Defends The Accused|
- Show to go on despite patchy ticket sales
LORD ARCHER has leapt to the defence of his play, The Accused, after rumours circulated that disastrous box office returns would lead to its early closure.
"We will complete our contract as agreed," Archer said. "There's no reason for us to finish the run earlier than planned." That run takes the critically hammered show up until the start of March but theatre industry insiders reckon The Accused's run will be arrested well short of then.
The main selling point of the play is the fit between Archer's real and stage lives. In the play audiences have the chance to vote on whether the former Tory politician is guilty of murder; in reality Archer faces a May trial at the Old Bailey on an alleged perjury rap.
