NEW HOME FOR HAPPY HAMPSTEAD
- Hampstead theatre goes from strength to strength

HAMPSTEAD THEATRE has won a £9.86m National Lottery grant from the Arts Council of England and raised a further £2.3 million to begin renovating its dilapidated home.

“This is an amazing occasion for our theatre as a key new writing producer here and abroad” says artistic director Jenny Topper. Due to open in 2002, the landmark building will be a translucent structure housing an elliptical auditorium and a space for community work. The funding comes in recognition of the Hampstead’s support of new writing over the past twelve years.

Work begins as Hampstead’s Winter Season commences, opening with a play called Ancient Lights about an American film star spending Christmas with friends. Having premiered her debut at the Hampstead in 1996, playwright Stephenson typifies the strong links sustained between the theatre and its writers. Ancient Lights opens 8pm Wednesday 6 December at the Hampstead Theatre.
