AltaVista Pull Plug on Unmetered Access
- 250,000 customers left high and dry

ALTAVISTA have risked the wrath of huge numbers of internet customers by announcing the cancellation of a much-hyped unmetered access service.

The American company, best known for its search engine, received the plaudits of government ministers and industry experts when it launched its unmetered scheme back in March. But trouble brewed when it became clear that, despite signing up 250,000 subscribers, AltaVista had not actually started the service by June, when it was meant to go live.

Now AltaVista are trying to blame telecom giants BT for the flop of its scheme. "Until flat rate circuits are available [from BT] in mass market quantities, neither we, nor anyone else will be unable to offer an affordable or economically viable service," said an AltaVista spokesperson.
