Hague: I'm No Heavy Drinker
- Opposition leader retracts boozing claim

WILLIAM HAGUE just couldn't stomach the idea of being a 14-pints a day drinker - as he admitted yesterday that his infamous comments may have been misleading.

"It is not as if I am advocating drinking a lot of beer or saying that I would do it now, It would kill me. It was a truthful answer about the odd day doing a holiday job 20 years ago," Mr Hague said.

The Conservative leader had obviously been under the influence of alcohol enough to be unable to remember the exact number of times he had consumed 14 pints. " It is not the sort of thing you would know if you had done it," he said.

He did however seem much more alert when discussing the party's recent poor showing at the polls. "I do not accept we are in a weaker position. We have never opened the champagne in this office when we've gone up in the opinion polls. We have never got down in the dumps when we have gone down."
