Gates Closed on Greenwich Time
- Internet standard hit by browser code

GREENWICH time keepers could be forgiven for blaming Bill Gates for the failure of their project to introduce a world standard time on the web.

In a government backed scheme, the Interactive Media Group and its partners hoped that their Greenwich Electronic Time (GeT) would become the virtual equivalent to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) but Gates's Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, used by 80 per cent of surfers, appears to have scuppered those plans.

Internet Explorer (IE) apparently runs code that renders GeT's clocks almost useless. GeT's great claim was that it was based on a system of incredibly accurate atomic clocks but something in IE has the unfortunate effect of interfering with the time shown on screen.

"You have to ask Microsoft why their version of their own software doesn't do what their published details say it will," said Keith Mitchell of the London Internet Exchange.
