Hague Gets Racist Warning
- Tory leader damages race relations, says refugee body

TORY leader William Hague stands accused of stoking up racial hatred after last night's speech in which he called for refugees to be locked up and forcibly removed from Britain.

Hague's plan was labelled "extremely damaging to race relations by" by the usually moderate Refugee Council and condemned by Labour and Liberal Democrat politicians as cynical electioneering ahead of next month's local elections including the London mayor battle.

"All asylum-seekers would be kept in custody," said Hague in the much trumpeted speech last night. The Tory leader, way behind Prime Minister Tony Blair in opinion polls, also said he would set up a "removals agency" to throw refugees out of the country if he was ever elected Premier and called most asylum seekers "bogus" meanwhile claiming to speak for genuine cases.

Labour Home Secretary Jack Straw attacked Hague's scheme but has already overseen the opening of one refugee camp (where Hague says "custody", Shaw says "reception centre") and has plans for more to come
