White Feasts on Libel Win
- Now wedding on the menu for star chef

MARCO PIERRE WHITE marries long time girl friend Mati tomorrow with a hefty wedding present from two American newspapers already giving cause for celebration.

The trendy chef won his libel case against the New York Times and New York Herald Tribune over the papers' allegation that he went on a "well publicised bout with drugs and alcohol."

White explained in court how he was careful with his drink intake after growing up with an alcoholic father and said that he had never taken drugs in his life. Judge Morland awarded UKP75,000 in punitive damages against the two papers and commented on; their failure to apologise after White's initial complaint, the way they called the chef greedy and the fact they hired private detectives to tail him.

The New York duo's case hung on a preface to White's book White Heat in which he writes of going on a "big bender," but the controversial cook told the court he didn't write the words as he is dyslexic. The New York Times and New York Herald Tribune plan to appeal.
