The English Team

London at the World Cup

They call it the World Cup, but it is really a London thing, a summer get-together on foreign soil for the city’s footballers.

For the TV cameras and a small fee, London’s top professional footballers will resignedly arrange themselves into teams based on nation-states, but when no-one’s looking, our stars line-up in one of two teams. They play for either the London Latecomers or the London True-Borns.

(only one player per country allowed in a bid to brag about the famed cosmopolitan nature of London)

(all hatched in London, except Walcott, who was born very close and is very young, so we’ll let him off and let him in. All play for England, except Cox, who plays for Trinidad and Tobago.)

At first glance, you would have thought the Latecomers XI would wipe the floor with the True-Borns, but that’s why the latter have sportingly included Crystal Palace’s own-goal specialist Tony Popovic in their line-up, to even things up a bit.
