It's not every day that you happen across a brand new superstar, but in the Gossip we have ourselves a bona-fide rock-icon in the shape of sublime soul-fire vocalist and generation-inspiration, Beth Ditto. Set to go supernova, the Gossip now release the killer title track from the album of the same name 'Standing In The Way Of Control'.
Along with the unique Motown-meets-Dischord feel of brilliant guitarist Brace Paine and kick-ass drumming of Hannah Blilie, the Gossip have left audiences wowed throughout Europe this summer. With five sell-out shows in the UK this July, plus national media support from the likes of Channel 4's 'Transmission' television show, Jo Whiley and Zane Lowe at Radio One, an astonishing eight page spread on the incomparable Ditto in i-D magazine, and pieces in, among others, The Times and NME, the Gossip has been this year's success story.
But it's only the beginning.
'Standing In The Way Of Control' is an irrefutable ANTHEM. Written by Beth as a response to her government's decision to deny gays the right to marriage in the US, the track has been picked up by DJs in clubs and at festivals across the world and exploded, becoming an international demand for civil rights.
"Nobody in the States was that surprised or shocked by what Bush did, but it made everyone I know feel helpless and cheated," Beth says. "I wrote the chorus to try and encourage people not to give up. It's a scary time for civil rights, but I really believe the only way to survive is to stick together and keep fighting."
Sporting one of the hottest guitar riffs since 'Seven Nation Army' and Beth's urgent cry adding a tinderbox spark, this track is already a landmark release of 2006, and now looks like being a major hit.
To make this even more special, Back Yard Records has commissioned remixes from Soulwax, Trevor Jackson and Headman along with the Le Tigre mix (which was released earlier by Kill Rock Stars) to make this the single of the year. The 7" and CD versions also come with a blistering live version of album track 'Yr Mangled Heart', taken from 100 Club in London from this June.
